Painted by Chitarman soon after Shah Jahan’s accession, this folio from the Shah Jahan Album shows the emperor richly dressed and jewelled, a halo behind his head and angels hovering above, a motif the Mughal court borrowed from European art. The picture brings together the skills of many court craftsmen, from jewellers and weavers to armourers and stonecutters. It is Chitarman’s earliest dated picture.
